Do you know what NV centers are?💎

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers are quantum imperfections trapped inside a diamond's crystal lattice. These defects occur when a single nitrogen atom takes the place of a carbon atom right next to an empty space, or vacancy, creating a "trapped atom". What makes these defects useful to us is that we can manipulate and read their electron spins using lasers and microwaves.

The optical and spin properties of NV centers were discovered 35 years ago. Because they are incredibly sensitive to their surroundings, scientists are using them for ultra-precise quantum communication and sensors. Key features of NV centers include long coherence times, nuclear spin (electron, nitrogen, and carbon) coupling effects that increase the number of qubits that store and process quantum information, and strong optical interference, which allows us to send quantum states far away and connect NV centers over long distances through spin-photon entanglement.
