Hi friends! This month, I wanted to focus in a bit on the trip to Japan I went on last summer. Stationery is huge in Japan, and I definitely came back with fresh energy for making when I came back home.

There are so many traditional methods of hand-crafting patterns in Japan - from pressure-based shibori dye patterns, to elaborately block-printed rice papers, to stitching patterns into older or worn fabrics with sashiko. For our June newsletter, we're talking flowers and fans! There were a lot of inspiring pieces of paper ephemera in Japan, and the first one I am trying to make at home is an uchiwa fan. These hand fans are often given away as branded promotional items, and with the heat and humidity in Tokyo it was easy to see why - they worked really well for getting through a summer festival or sporting even on a hot day, and they also were a lovely way to carry around a little piece of functional art.
