DELIVERANCE

Four city-dwelling friends decide to get away from their jobs, wives and kids for a week of canoeing in rural Georgia. When the men arrive, they are not welcomed by the backwoods locals, who stalk the vacationers and savagely attack them in the woods. Reeling from the ambush, the friends attempt to return home but are surrounded by dangerous rapids and pursued by a madman. Soon, their canoe trip turns into a fight for survival.

Following a twenty-five year break from feature filmmaking, Swedish existentialist Roy Andersson reintroduced his singular vision to the world with this by turns bleak and mordantly funny vision of the tragicomic absurdity of modern life. Forty-six seemingly random, deadpan, and precisely composed vignettes depict a mercilessly capitalist world in breakdown. An office worker is fired in the most humiliating way possible; a magician fails at a magic trick; self-flagellating stockbrokers take to the streets; and one desperate man decides to burn it all down.
