One of the things that I love the most is the actual product development phase of bringing products and tools to life!

The board in these pictures will be an Active-MSS tester / Stimulus injector. MSS was developed for Free-mo but can be used with any modular/sectional layout.

This board was assembled for the first time a couple days ago. The first mistake immediately noticed is that the RJ45 connector for the MSS cable was designed facing inward instead of outward! 🤦‍♂️

This MSS Tester will be able to simulate being a normal MSS node or an Active-MSS node (one or two track support). In standard MSS mode, any of the lines will be settable and readable. In Active-MSS mode, the interface will negotiate either a standard MSS connection or an Active-MSS connection if available. When an Active-MSS node is present, the MSS Tester will allow testing of full APB/CTC statuses and crossing approaches for one or two tracks depending on the node settings. Active-MSS is capable of so much more!

This will be our very first battery-powered device and there were a few design issues already found pertaining to power saving features that will be revised.

This morning, firmware design progressed enough to get the LCD display to show four rows of a binary count, thus proving that the microcontroller can interface with the LCD correctly. Next steps will be to develop characters and menus with the navigation switch.

This has been a wish-list item for some of our Active-MSS users out there to allow advanced functional checks of their module prior to installing their installations in a full MSS layout.

This board will be finished with a custom enclosure to protect the board and battery during use.

We couldn't make it to Trainfest this year due to being scheduled to fly to Germany for our 1:1 scale professional efforts. Those plans got delayed only recently so we could not organize attending in Milwaukee after all.

Instead, we spent today volunteering at the Edmonton Radial Railway Society to help secure the cabling for an Axle-Counter Block installation that we helped design and install a few years ago. The ERRS uses the ACB system to activate traffic lights for the streetcars to cross safely over this busy roadway.

We are in Burlington, Ontario at the Real Rails 2025 Convention this weekend. We don't have a sophisticated display but we are still getting people educated and excited about signaling. Our Kevin Rudko is also presenting clinics on railway signaling in Canada.
