Volunteer and Awards Since 1986

I arrived in South Huron in 1986 as a new O.P.P. Officer. I soon realized that I was working in a community of great volunteers and community minded persons. I volunteered with several organizations:

1989 – 1991
I was a member of the Exeter Junior D Hawks Executive .

1989 – 1998
I was a Big Brother for the Big Brothers Big Sisters program in South Huron. I was given the opportunity to work with a little brother who was 9 years old at the time and was his mentor until he turned 18 years old in 1998. At my Retirement Open House in April 2016 and in recognition of my time with the program I donated the total proceeds of $1700.xx from the donations collected at my retirement to the Big Brothers Big Sister program. Over 600 people attended my open house retirement celebration.
From 2006 to 2007 I was a member of the Board of Directors for Big Brothers big Sisters South Huron.

2003- 2011
I was a leader in the 1st Exeter Scouts Canada program for youth. I worked with hundreds of youth from across Ontario and networked with various leaders from across Canada to bring quality programming to South Huron. In 2006 I created two annual camps for the 1st Exeter Group that sees as many as 340 Scouting youth attend from across South Western Ontario, as far away as Windsor, by partnering with the Starlite Drive-in in Shipka. A Spring Camp and a Fall Camp was held at the Drive-In where youth camp on Saturday until Sunday, have a campfire ceremony, watch two movies and camp in tents overnight. I left the program in 2011 to pursue my children’s other interests but these and other camps I designed were still being held after I left the program.
2004 – 2009, 2014 and 2016
I was head coach / team manager for both soccer and baseball in South Huron for youths 5 years to 11 years of age.
From 2004 to 2017
I was a member of the Exeter Public School / Elementary School Parent Council. I initiated several projects within the school to improve a safer environment.
In 2004 I reviewed the traffic flow in and around the school on Victoria Street and conducted a thorough study of it. As a result and with the support of the School Council I approached the Municipal Council to create a crosswalk, implement several new bylaws and an additional sidewalk. All of these measures were approved to increase the safety of the school children.
In 2006 I petitioned the School Board for funding to redesign the entrance of the school to ensure a safer and more welcoming entrance to the school. As a result of my presentation and study that I presented to the School Board, $250,000.xx was invested to redesign it.
In 2015 I presented another Security Review to the School Board since challenges to security had changed from 2006. As a result, more security measures were added to bring it to what it is today.

2006
Although I am not a Mason, I was the Recipient of Masonic Lodge of Canada “Award of Merit” in recognition of over 100 blood donations. I began to donate whole blood when I was 17 years old because my grandmother needed blood and I continued to donate until up to about ten years ago when I donated my last (137th donation ).

2008
I pursued an opportunity that would allow many groups and organizations to work collectively together to host what I coined “Canadians In Uniform Day” featuring the R.C.M.P. Musical RIDE and the O.P.P. Golden Helmets Precision Motorcycle Team. As Chairperson I formed a dynamic committee of seven people and reached out to several organizations within South Huron asking that these organizations participate. The Exeter Lions Club was designated the official host for charitable reasons and we included a dozen other local groups and organizations to participate to show what South Huron has to offer. This one day event that was held on Sept 11 2008 drew approx 3200 students to a career day where they interacted with eight different “Canadians In Uniform”. The Inspector in charge of the R.C.M.P. Musical RIDE was quoted how extremely impressed he was with the inter agency cooperation we achieved with the various uniform agencies. How there were over 50 uniformed members of various agencies and over 80 volunteers working strongly together. The evening show brought out over 4000 spectators to view the R.C.M.P. Musical RIDE. Over $40,000xx was raised and this money went back into community projects through the Lions club.

2009 – 2017
In 2009 I surveyed the community of South Huron to see if there was enough interest to host a Town Wide Yard Sale. I found that there was but there needed to be some leadership to organize this event. I formed a committee with two others and as a result “Exeter is ON SALE” was born. South Huron has visitors attending this event annually from as far away as Michigan, Buffalo and all points in between. The visitors tell me it is the most organized and one of, if not the largest, Town Wide Yard Sales in Ontario as it draws as many as 5000 people annually to this one day event. Visitors shop at the yard sales and then shop “down town”. My goal for this event was to provide an opportunity for citizens of South Huron to interact with each other and for neighbours to meet each other thus building positive relationships. It also shows other communities the leadership South Huron has adopted by Reducing, Reusing and Recycle their unwanted items.

2010- present
As a parent with two children (now adults) with type 1 diabetes, my wife and I became Peer Mentor Volunteers for London Children’s Hospital for newly diagnosed families with Type 1 Diabetic children in Huron County. My oldest son has also stepped into this same role.

2011 - 2017
Created "Family Day Winterfest - South Huron". Event Coordinator/Chairperson. An event to encourage community involvement involving 25 groups/businesses and organizations with over 70 volunteers. In 2010 the Exeter Lions Club held a breakfast on Family Day. As a member of the Friends of the South Huron Trail I proposed to host a fireworks display in February 2011 for the community on Family Day. I approached the Lions, Optimists and several other groups to seek their support to work together to promote a positive experience for the citizens of South Huron. As a result “Family Day Winterfest South Huron” was born. It has now grown to bring 2000 people annually from as far away as London, Goderich and Brantford.

2013 to 2017
Events Coordinator for "Canada Day South Huron". I was asked to join the committee to seek out new events and new opportunities for Canada Day. Our events list grew to the point that a poster could not display all the events and we had to use a 4’ X 8’ board with the events listed. Canada Day South Huron was successful due to the well established program with many dedicated volunteers.
The events that I am Chairperson for and help coordinate yearly such as Family Day Winterfest, Exeter is ON SALE, Canada Day and the Canadians In Uniform Day allows anyone and everyone in the community to participate in. These events make the community a fun place to be and allows our community to be proud of these events happening in their own back yards. I capitalize on the fact we have a very strong volunteer base here and encourage others to participate to achieve personal satisfaction for all involved. There is no “I” in Teamwork but there is in “I” will help you.

Ontario 2016 Volunteer Service Award. Presented for 5 years Volunteer Service with the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority.
