But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”
1 Peter 1:15-16 (NIV)
For the first time in 65 years, London’s iconic Holy Roller tank, so called because it was used at Juno Beach on D-Day, is no longer standing guard at the northern end of Victoria Park in London Ontario. This past June a massive crane delicately hoisted the historic 33-ton military vehicle skyward from its longtime pad, placing it on a nearby flatbed truck for transportation to Fanshawe College where the Holy Roller will undergo a badly-needed, year-long restoration.

The word “holy” has taken on one of two meanings – the world speaks of a holy roller in a negative sense – describing someone whom they think of as narrowminded and to be avoided at all costs, or something that is impossible to attain. Neither of these is how the Bible defines being holy. The command in 1 Peter 1:15-16 is clear: “But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’” The Biblical definition of holy is to be set apart for use by God. There was nothing put-offish about Jesus – people clamoured to be with him, to be taught by him, to be healed by him, to be delivered by him. Holiness is not something unattainable – it is to be so filled by the presence of Jesus that we think like him, act like him, be like him. It is impossible for us to become holy in our own power and strength. We will fail every time we try. It comes by daily surrender to the Lordship of Jesus in our lives, and being so filled with His presence that we desire nothing but Him.

These have been words from the heart.
