Today we received a phone call from the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History - they had a honey bee swarm that needed to be picked up, so of course we went to see them.
When we arrived, one of the museum staff, Heather, already had the bees in a nuc box. The problem was, the majority of the bees were in the box but it was so hot that some of the bees just didn't want to go in. They were bearding on the outside, just hanging around trying to keep their new home cool.
We ended up going to the nearest dollar store and buying mosquito jackets. We tied the sleeves shut and duck taped all the zippers. Then Lonnie & Heather moved the box into not one, but two mosquito jackets.
That way the hive can stay open, the bees can stay cool and we can safely transport them home on the back of our truck.
No visit to the museum is complete without a visit with Gus, the Museum's 100 year old Gopher Tortoise. While we were loading the bees in the back of the truck, Sarah went out front and said hi to him.
For more information on Gus, visit this page on the Museum of Natural History's website:

If you get a chance this summer stop into the Museum on Summer Street in Halifax and check out their cool observation hive and display.....and visit Gus, of course!
We will be posting more bee updates soon!
