Stone to the ceiling. A fireplace like this doesn't need much help, so we kept everything around it simple: a rough-cut mantel, wood beams overhead, and a window with a water view doing the rest.

A kitchen photographed the day we hand over the keys is nice. A kitchen photographed a year later—with bananas on the island, the kettle within reach, and a coffee bar with its own sink, is better. Built to be used, and it shows.

Built-ins earn their keep quietly. Cabinets below, floating shelves above, and a green feature wall that makes the fireplace the anchor of the whole room. Add the rough-cut mantel and beams, and the space has character before a single piece of furniture arrives.

Spring in Nova Scotia hits a little different when the build is wrapping up and the cedar is still bright!

Islands are funny. You spend months on the drawings, pick the stone, argue about the overhang, debate whether five stools is too many or not enough. Then the house gets lived in and it turns out the island is where everything actually happens. Coffee in the morning. Laptop open in the afternoon. Wine poured in the evening. Kids doing homework in the middle of all of it. The rest of the kitchen is doing real work, but the island is doing the social work.
