THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING AN EDUCATION INFLUENCER IN AESTHETIC MEDICINE
Those who have heard me speak at national and international meetings know my unwavering commitment to elevating aesthetic medicine through evidence based education. In today’s social media landscape, patients are increasingly exposed to medical advice from Instagram influencers rather than credentialed practitioners.

As healthcare professionals, we must uphold the standards of our specialty. That means avoiding the provision of medical advice to individuals with whom we have no therapeutic relationship, and instead focusing on creating content grounded in research, clinical experience, and ethical practice. Every educational post should clearly state the provider’s name, credentials and include references that support the information being shared.

We are educators and advocates by nature. Yet within aesthetics, there has been a concerning trend toward prioritizing follower counts over professionalism. Content designed for entertainment or virality often misrepresents the role of aesthetic providers and undermines the credibility we have worked so hard to build.
Regulators have begun scrutinizing social media content more closely, recognizing its impact on public perception and professional conduct. While our collective image has improved, we still have work to do to restore the reputation our specialty held before social media blurred the lines of professionalism.

Our responsibility is to uphold evidence based practice, protect patient safety, and ensure our online presence reflects the integrity of our profession.

Non‑compliance has been costly for this Toronto clinic, and it serves as a reminder to all of us.
We must work strictly within our scope of practice, uphold the standards of our profession, and protect the trust our patients place in us.

*Be an education influencer, not an Instagram influencer.
*Respect patient confidentiality at every turn.
*Advocate for your patients, your profession, and the integrity of aesthetic medicine.

As a unified voice, we can rise above the noise and distractions that bombard us daily on social media. Our specialty depends on leaders who choose ethics, safety, and professionalism.
