Q: Do I need to start paying tax installments—and how do I know?

A: If you owed more than $3,000 in taxes this past year (or in either of the two previous years), the CRA may require you to start making quarterly tax installment payments. These are essentially pre-payments toward your next tax bill to help spread the cost out over the year.

Even if you’re not required to pay installments yet, it can still be a smart move—especially if your income is growing or less predictable. It helps avoid a large balance owing (and potential interest) at tax time.
