Yesterday, I ran into an old friend who reminded me of a tiny act of kindness prompted by a much kinder person.
He asked: "Do you remember giving my son Mats Sundin's hockey tape?"
I covered the Leafs for nearly 20 years. Occasionally, I would pedestrianize a half-used roll of hockey tape while enduring the interminable wait for a hockey player. I figured MLSE could afford it.
When I would meet or hear of a young player, I would reach into my pocket, hand over the tape and say that Mats Sundin uses this tape. There's magic in it. Go score some goals.
I know Mats would be ok with that because once, when we were both at an all-star game, he lent me equipment so I cold play in the media game. His shin pads came to my waist.
The great thing about Mats Sundin, and there were many great things, is that whenever you asked him a question that contained the word "you," the answer always came back built around the word "we."
When you write about someone, those details speak powerfully.
