What every Physiotherapist wants you to know About Arthritis
There are so many scary things that are out there on the internet about arthritis. Dr. Google sometimes is not our friends.
Physiotherapists (especially us at STAVE OFF) work with people with arthritis a LOT.
There are a couple of trends that we wish that all of our clients knew about arthritis.
1️⃣A joint replacement isn’t inevitable! I know it can seem like it because the arthritis isn’t going away. But its more than that! You can have pain that is managed and you can do all of the things you love without needing a major surgery. For some it’s the right path. But you have a CHOICE
2️⃣Exercise especially lifting weights is one of the best things you can do for your arthritis. Movement is medicine for arthritis. Knee feeling stiff? A walk and some squats would help! Getting your blood pumping can make your joints feel looser and you can instantly feel better. Ever notice you feel most stiff in the morning? Thats because you haven’t been moving!
3️⃣Managing the pain from arthritis doesn’t need to be done with meds. Pain relievers like Tylenol and Voltaren can be great but you don’t HAVE to use medications. Heat, massage, stretching and other tricks can help too!
4️⃣You need to keep your body strong. When we are in pain we can become couch potatoes. It’s very easy to do I know. But pushing to get a bit of movement can keep your body strong and make all of those tasks easier to do.
