New World Screwworm cases continue to rise in the United States.

USDA APHIS has now confirmed more than 40 cases of New World Screwworm (NWS) in Texas and New Mexico. Cases have been identified in cattle, sheep, goats, and dogs. At this time, no confirmed cases have been reported in horses. Officials continue to actively monitor and respond to the outbreak.

New World Screwworm is a serious parasite because its larvae feed on living tissue, causing painful wounds that can rapidly expand if left untreated. Adult flies lay eggs in open wounds, surgical sites, or other areas of damaged skin, where the larvae hatch and begin feeding.

Horse owners are encouraged to:

• Inspect horses daily for wounds or unusual swelling.
• Practice good fly control.
• Clean and monitor any injuries closely.
• Contact your veterinarian immediately if you notice excessive drainage, foul-smelling wounds, delayed healing, or maggots.
