What if becoming a great therapist isn’t about technical perfection, but becoming more comfortable being yourself?

When Hilary first started practising, she believed every session needed a textbook intervention to be considered “”good therapy.”” She felt pressure to always bring the perfect skill into the room and worried that simply showing up as herself wasn’t enough.

Over the years, that perspective changed.

She discovered that some of the most meaningful moments in therapy come from authentic human connection. That means allowing your personality to show, laughing with clients when it feels natural, and even using the occasional swear word when it’s appropriate and helps clients feel seen.

It is not about being unprofessional. It is about recognizing that evidence-based practice and genuine connection can exist together.

Every therapist develops their own style, and that is exactly why finding the right therapist matters. The relationship is just as important as the techniques.

In this episode of After the Last Client, Melissa and Hilary reflect on the therapists they thought they would become, how their work has changed them, and why authenticity has become one of their greatest clinical tools.

Summer can bring up a lot for parents, especially around expectations.

What are you putting on yourself right now?

Maybe you grew up as a latchkey kid, fending for yourself after school, and now you’ve swung hard in the opposite direction. Every day is planned, every outing is intentional, and every moment feels like it should be meaningful.

And suddenly, you’re staring down 9 weeks of trying to meet every need, solve every boredom complaint, and create the “perfect” summer. That’s, frankly, too much.

Here’s something worth remembering: kids don’t need you to entertain them every second.

In fact, boredom can be incredibly valuable. It teaches curiosity, creativity, problem-solving, and self-reliance. It gives kids the opportunity to ask, “what could I do?” instead of always asking, “what are we doing?”

You don’t need to burn yourself out to give your kids a great summer.

You’re allowed to leave space for rest, slowness, and yes, even for boredom.

Send this to a parent who would really appreciate hearing this.
