August 31st, 2026 marks the 25th year of International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD). It's difficult to believe that a quarter-century has passed since this day was first observed — and that our communities are still facing this crisis. IOAD is a day to remember those we've lost to drug overdose and poisoning, and to acknowledge the grief carried by the families, friends, and communities left behind. More than ever, compassion, empathy, and support are needed.

Two events will be held in Waterloo Region at the end of August. Please mark your calendars for one or both:

• Willow River Park (Victoria Park), Kitchener on Wednesday, August 26, 2026 – 5:30pm to 7:30pm

• Soper Park, Cambridge on Monday, August 31, 2026 – 11:30am to 1:30pm
