Forest tent caterpillars! 🐛 These guys are a native pest but like anything, some years are more favourable than others for their lifecycle. Usually we see them in aspen stands but this clump was found on a Mayday limb (chokecherry species). Their numbers can get so high that they can fully defoliate an entire forest stand!
If you have these on your trees the best thing to do is spray them down with the hose. This disrupts their “congregation” and will help prevent damage to your trees without using harmful pesticides.

For the love of all things green can we all just agree to remove these things before planting? There are SO many landscapers out there leaving these things on, subsequently stressing or killing the tree it’s attached to, and then it gets left in the ground, for little old me to dig out a decade later. TAKE IT OFF WHEN YOU PLANT.
