Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) frequently co-present in patients, affecting millions of people every year. However, the mechanisms underlying their complex relationship are largely unclear.
For the first time, researchers have modeled the molecular events of how intermittent hypoxia, the hallmark of OSA, exacerbates lung fibrosis. These results inform our understanding of, and ultimately how we might treat, both conditions.
