As someone who had a midwife, I can’t stress enough how important and vital their role is in our health care system and the individuals they serve. I assumed that since midwives are covered under our MSP that they received all the same benefits as others in the same field of work because they deserve it!

Please spare 5 minutes of your time and write your local MLA.

supportbcmidwives - Midwives Association of British Columbia Midwives deliver for BC families every single day. But access to midwifery is already limited, and will get worse if the NDP Government doesn’t act now.

Here's a little exert from Evidence Based Birth.

What do doulas do?

Doulas nurture and support the birthing person throughout labor and birth. Their essential role is to provide continuous labor support to the mother, no matter what decisions the mother makes or how she gives birth

Importantly, the doula’s role and agenda are tied solely to the birthing person’s agenda. In other words, a doula’s primary responsibility is to the birthing person—not to a hospital administrator, nurse, midwife, or doctor.

A doula can provide labor support via the four pillars of labor support. In the textbook Best Practices in Midwifery, the author describes three pillars of labor support as emotional support, physical support, and advocacy. In the book Optimal Care in Childbirth, informational support is also listed as a pillar of support.
