Our Story
We are a small scale farm producing mixed veggies using organic and sustainable growing practices. We have always dreamed of starting our own farm so we went to school at UBC (Sustainable Agriculture Practicum 2015) to learn exactly how to make it happen! After completion, we were given an opportunity to lease a 1/2 acre of land in Gibsons. We eagerly took on the challenge and started Happy Seeds Farm on the Sunshine Coast of BC. We spent 2 years on our little plot, focusing on heirloom varieties of veggies, flower and herbs. We sold to local restaurants, at our farm gate stand and at a couple farmer’s markets. We also made some city trips and sold harvest boxes to our friends and family occasionally. We loved growing on the coast and had great success there. The community is so supportive and appreciative of local food. Sadly, we had to make the decision to stop production on the coast as we also had a baby at the same time and struggled the juggle of living on the coast for 6 months for our farming season and maintaining our primary residence in the city. Ferry costs were adding up and we had to find an alternative location closer to home in order to continue our dream of farming. We want to send a warm thank you to the Riggs family for giving us the opportunity to work on their land and grow veggies for the coastal communities. We feel very grateful for their help and support over the years and we have only grown in our knowledge because of the opportunity they gave us. :)
We connected with Al and Donna this year (2018) through the Young Agrarians website who own 17 acres in Maple Ridge (Duende Farm). We worked together growing organic veggies and provided a weekly, bi-weekly and “flex” week seasonal veggie box through our CSA (Community supported agriculture) to families and individuals over the summer. It went well and we made some awesome new connections and friends. We have had to make a difficult decision at the end of this season to take 2019 off from farming. Unfortunately, financial costs for us were much greater this year; we had to start from scratch in a new community and share 50% of our revenue with our new land owners. Being a new young family, trying to farm and grow food in a very expensive city is very challenging to say the least. We love it but its not easy!...so, we are taking next year off to re-group, re-plan and see if we can make it more financially viable in following years. We will see so stay tuned!
