Expect less when you place your dog into new scenarios, situations or around new distraction that they’ve never seen before. It’s ok to go back to luring to help your dog understand what is needed under these different conditions.
Pet your dog when they’re over stimulated … they’ll love it.
People pet their dogs and puppies at the wrong time all of the time. I see it so often. The dog doesn’t find petting pleasurable or rewarding when you do it at the wrong time. In fact, they can see it as a very negative experience and very much dislike it in the moment, but many people have blinders on when it comes to this.
Just imagine you are trying to play a sport. Let’s just say it’s hockey. And every time you make a great play, in the middle of the game, someone comes and takes off your helmet and runs their fingers through your hair for a couple minutes. First off gross. Second off, due to the adrenaline and competitiveness, that action is the last thing most athletes would want mid game. So this ends up being perceived in a negative light. This is very similar to petting when your dog is over stimulated, amidst a high energy training session or game, or for dogs who really just don’t enjoy it.
Just because you think something should be rewarding for your dog, doesn’t mean that your dog sees it the same way.

I’ve been cutting claws of many different dogs for over 30 years. But even with that amount of experience there is always a chance of clipping a quick, especially with black claws. Because of this, I ALWAYS pair claw clipping with high value rewards, but also with an attitude of sorry, you have no choice but to let me do this no matter what happens. The reason being, even when I make a mistake, which isn’t often, my dogs don’t loose their marbles. Of course some are more dramatic than others (uncle Frank) when a mistake happens, but they know that holding themselves together gets them the good stuff in the end, they also know they don’t have a choice, and they have to allow me to finish the job. And with this approach I get calm allowance and tolerance and sometimes excitement. This is the same approached that can be used for all sorts of grooming with very high rates of success. Sometimes it’s ok to say “sorry you have to” and give no other option - dogs are typically better off for it in the end. Your groomers and vets will thank you as well.
Side note, the dog in the photo didn’t even make a sound or pull away, I had no idea I clipped too far until I saw the blood. That’s not necessarily the norm, but the tough dogs built for high pain tolerance will react that way. The more sensitive dogs will definitely let you know that you made a mistake.
