What do you do to help fight climate change?
In this second video in the series on climate change, Marina Huissoon asks and answers the question – What do you do to mitigate the effects of climate change? It’s an important dialogue to initiate and continue as it affects us globally and individually and requires action at both levels to have any beneficial effect.
Marina directs her ideas towards planners, builders and homeowners. Something as simple as the appropriate placement and number of windows in a structure can both save on heating and cooling in all seasons and doesn’t add to project costs.
Creating a more sustainable built environment involves many disciplines and sectors from better land use planning, and increased development of passive energy sources to rethinking transportation systems. The job of designers is to constantly evolve innovative solutions in an effort to challenge all players in the built environment to make progress towards greater sustainability.

Adaptive reuse refers to the process of reusing an existing building for a purpose other than which it was originally built or designed for. Adaptive reuse of buildings can be an attractive alternative to new construction in terms of sustainability and has prevented thousands of buildings' demolition and has allowed them to become critical components of urban regeneration.
Green Propeller has worked on a number of projects, creating something new and purposeful.

Sustainable Workplaces
As we fight our way to Zero Fossil fuels, the choices we make about materials in the built environment don’t stop at the building itself – all of the materials inside the building need to be considered as well – furniture, carpets, paint, ceiling tiles, fridges, computers,… the list is endless.
There is much effort being applied to find better ways to recycle materials, use less, and produce materials that don’t contain fossil fuels. There are standards available to measure the Global Warming Potential of material, in an attempt to filter out the worst offenders from our list of go-to products. Anything that emits greenhouse gasses, made with large amounts of Carbon Dioxide in the processing, or materials that off-gas Carbon Dioxide, Methane, CFC’s, Nitrous Oxide, and other noxious chemicals, should be targeted for replacement with better, more sustainable, materials.

Bronte Medical Building
Located on a prominent gateway corner to downtown Milton, a new 23,000 sq.ft. office building makes a strong urban design statement. Making best use of a tight site, the development includes underground parking, main floor retail, and upper floor tenant spaces.
Green Propeller Design provided full architectural services; site plan approval, programming, design services, permit documents, construction documents, and contract administration throughout construction phase. The technical drawings were produced in Revit, with structural drawings also in Revit, which greatly enhanced the coordination of the design. 3-dimensional models were also useful for communication with the Owner and potential tenants, as it enabled them to visualize the design without needing to understand technical drawings.
