Affordable housing is limited — that’s why homelessness happens.

In "Homelessness is a Housing Problem", Gregg Colburn explains why focusing on individual behavior misses the point — the real problem is a shortage of housing, not the people experiencing it.

Colburn compares the housing crisis to a game of musical chairs. You can try to guess who might miss a seat. Joe has a broken leg. Sally isn’t paying attention. But individual challenges don’t create the shortage. Even if everyone were able-bodied and alert, there still wouldn’t be enough homes.

Canada simply doesn’t have enough housing. And the homes that do exist aren’t always affordable or accessible.

In the end, somebody is left without a chair.
