I recently attended the Ontario Natural Building Conference hosted by the and left with one big realization: so many of the materials we consider “normal” in modern homes were never designed to last, age gracefully, or even be repaired.

Meanwhile, natural materials like lime plaster, hempcrete, straw bale, clay, and earthen finishes are proving that homes can be:

— healthier

— more durable

— repairable

— lower waste

— and more connected to the environment around them

One idea that really stayed with me was this: What if we designed homes with the expectation that they will age, and that we can care for them instead of constantly replacing them?

Because right now, many conventional materials become landfill the moment they’re damaged.

I also learned about:

• insulation made from seaweed + agricultural byproducts

• deconstruction companies saving up to 90% of building materials from going to the landfill

• natural finishes that can be repaired or refinished instead of ripped out

The more I learn about sustainable building, the more I realize how much we’ve accepted as “normal” in construction.

Not because it’s better, just because it’s common.
