Golden Apricot opens in Yerevan with 90 films from 40 countries

(Horizon Media / YEREVAN) — The 23rd Golden Apricot Yerevan International Film Festival officially opened on July 13 at the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concert Complex, launching a week of screenings, industry events and cultural programmes featuring filmmakers and artists from Armenia and abroad.

The opening film was Tamara Stepanyan’s Armenian-French co-production Arto’s Country. Stepanyan described the film as a “love letter” to Armenia, Armenian cinema, the country’s wounds and its lost lands, noting that presenting it in her homeland carried particular significance.

Running through July 19, the festival will screen 90 films from 40 countries at the Cinema House, Moscow Cinema and Nairi Cinema. Its programme includes works previously presented at major international festivals such as Cannes, Berlin and Locarno, alongside educational initiatives, exhibitions and events marking the centenary of the Armenian silent film Namus.

Festival Director and Artistic Director Karen Avetisyan said Golden Apricot is now among the film festivals recognized by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations. Around 200 international guests are attending this year, including Academy Award-winning filmmaker Paweł Pawlikowski, producer Sev Ohanian, cinematographers Bruno Delbonnel and Mahmoud Kalari, and trumpeter and composer Ibrahim Maalouf.

During the opening ceremony, festival founder Harutyun Khachatryan presented the Master Award to Austrian filmmaker Jessica Hausner, who is presiding over this year’s international jury. French cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel received the Parajanov’s Thaler Award for his contribution to world cinema, while Maalouf performed a musical improvisation dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Namus.

French-Armenian actor, playwright and director Simon Abkarian is also among the festival’s honorary guests. He will present Antonin Baudry’s historical drama De Gaulle: Tilting Iron on July 16, in which he portrays General Charles de Gaulle during the collapse of France in June 1940 and the creation of the Free France movement.

Abkarian said de Gaulle’s refusal to accept defeat and his struggle to restore his country’s honour resonated deeply with him as an Armenian. He also emphasized the importance of festivals such as Golden Apricot in helping Armenia and the diaspora claim a broader place in world cinema.

“We have many stories to tell,” Abkarian said, stressing that Armenian cinema must extend beyond films about the Armenian Genocide and also present the history, struggle, literature, art and cultural identity of the Armenian people.

ՀՌՈՄ — Իսրայէլի եւ Լիբանանի ներկայացուցիչները Միացեալ Նահանգներու միջնորդութեամբ երկօրեայ բանակցութիւններ սկսած են Հռոմի մէջ՝ փորձելով գործադրութեան դնել Յունիս 26-ին գոյացած շրջանակային համաձայնութիւնը։

Բանակցութիւններուն գլխաւոր նիւթը հարաւային Լիբանանի մէջ երկու փորձնական գօտիներու ստեղծումն է, ուր իսրայէլեան ուժերը պիտի հեռանան, իսկ լիբանանեան բանակը պիտի ստանձնէ տարածքներուն վերահսկողութիւնը։ Ծրագիրը նաեւ կը նախատեսէ «Հըզպալլա»-ի զինեալ ներկայութեան եւ ենթակառոյցներուն հեռացումը այդ շրջաններէն։

Կողմերուն միջեւ հիմնական տարակարծութիւնը գործողութիւններու հերթականութեան շուրջ է։ Լիբանան կը պահանջէ, որ Իսրայէլ նախ սկսի իր ուժերուն հեռացումը, մինչդեռ Իսրայէլ կ՛ուզէ երաշխիքներ, որ «Հըզպալլա» պիտի չվերադառնայ լքուած տարածքներ։

«Հըզպալլա» չէ մասնակցած համաձայնութեան մշակման եւ մերժած է զինաթափման պահանջները։ Հռոմի բանակցութիւններէն առայժմ յստակ յառաջխաղացք չէ հաղորդուած։

Fitch keeps Armenia’s credit rating at ‘BB-’ with positive outlook

(Horizon Media / YEREVAN) — Fitch Ratings has affirmed Armenia’s long-term sovereign credit rating at “BB-” while maintaining a Positive Outlook, citing stronger foreign currency reserves, continued economic growth and reduced near-term risks of renewed conflict with Azerbaijan.

The agency said the US-sponsored peace framework has lowered the likelihood of an immediate military escalation. However, it warned that uncertainty surrounding the conclusion of a final agreement remains, particularly because Azerbaijan’s demand for constitutional changes in Armenia could require a referendum, possibly in 2027.

Fitch also identified Armenia’s deteriorating relations with Russia as a major economic risk. Russia remains Armenia’s largest trading partner, supplies more than 80 per cent of its imported natural gas and accounts for roughly 35 per cent of Armenian goods exports.

Recent Russian restrictions on Armenian food imports and transit, as well as warnings over preferential energy and diamond arrangements, could place pressure on economic growth, inflation, public finances and the country’s external position. Fitch noted that natural gas accounts for about 61 per cent of Armenia’s energy needs, leaving the country vulnerable to potential supply disruptions or price increases.

Armenia’s economy expanded by 7.1 per cent in 2025, while Fitch expects growth to slow to 5.2 per cent in 2026 — still well above the average for similarly rated countries. Medium-term growth is projected to remain near five per cent, supported by the information technology sector, the planned opening of the Amulsar gold mine and major infrastructure projects.

The agency said the proposed TRIPP transit route connecting Azerbaijan with Nakhchivan through Armenia, the possible reopening of the Turkey-Armenia border and plans for a large artificial intelligence data centre could provide further economic benefits. However, these prospects remain dependent on geopolitical stability and the successful implementation of regional agreements.

Inflation is expected to average 4.4 per cent in 2026 before gradually returning toward the Central Bank of Armenia’s three per cent target. Fitch anticipates that the central bank may temporarily raise its policy rate by 0.25 percentage points to 6.75 per cent.

Armenia’s budget deficit reached 3.7 per cent of GDP in 2025, performing better than the government’s target but remaining above the average among “BB”-rated countries. Fitch expects spending pressures to continue because of the introduction of universal health care and higher pensions, although declining defence and security expenditures may partly offset those costs.

Government debt fell to 47.2 per cent of GDP at the end of 2025 and is expected to remain broadly stable over the coming years. Armenia’s foreign currency reserves also reached a record $5.9 billion at the end of May, strengthening the country’s ability to absorb external shocks.

Nevertheless, Fitch warned that Armenia’s current account deficit remains high and that reserve coverage is still below the median for similarly rated states. The agency also pointed to rapid private-sector lending growth but said Armenian banks remain well capitalized, liquid and profitable.

Fitch said Armenia could receive a rating upgrade if geopolitical risks decline, economic growth remains strong and public debt follows a stable or downward path. Conversely, renewed conflict, a collapse of the peace process, worsening tensions with Russia or persistent external and fiscal imbalances could lead to negative rating action.

ԵՐԵՒԱՆ — TRIPP երթուղիին առնչուող սահմանային անվտանգութեան եւ մաքսային բոլոր գործառոյթները պիտի մնան Հայաստանի վերահսկողութեան տակ, «Ազատութեան» յայտնած է ԱՄՆ արտաքին գործերու նախարարութիւնը։

Ամերիկեան գերատեսչութիւնը ընդգծած է, որ նախագիծը կը պահպանէ Հայաստանի ինքնիշխանութիւնը, տարածքային ամբողջականութիւնն ու իրաւազօրութիւնը։ «Հայաստանի իշխանութիւններն են, որ պիտի իրականացնեն վերահսկողութիւնը եւ կայացնեն առանցքային որոշումները», նշուած է պատասխանի մէջ։

Հայաստանի փոխարտաքին գործերու նախարար Մնացական Սաֆարեան վերջերս յայտարարած էր, որ Հայաստանը կը շարունակէ մնալ ԵԱՏՄ-ի անդամ, հետեւաբար TRIPP-ի ծիրէն ներս տարանցման գործընթացները պիտի իրականացուին միութեան գործող կանոնակարգերուն հիման վրայ։

ԱՄՆ արտաքին գործերու նախարարութիւնը չէ յստակացուցած, սակայն, թէ TRIPP-ի համար առանձին տարանցման կարգաւորումներ կը նախատեսուի՞ն, կամ այս հարցին շուրջ Երեւանի եւ Ուաշինկթընի միջեւ արդէն համաձայնութիւն գոյութիւն ունի՞։

Հայաստանի արտաքին գործերու նախարար Արարատ Միրզոյեան իր կարգին չէր բացառած, որ փաստաթուղթերու ընդունման, ուղեւորներու անմիջական սպասարկման եւ տարանցման վճարներու գանձման որոշ գործառոյթներ վստահուին երրորդ երկրի մը։ Ուաշինկթըն նաեւ չէ բացայայտած, թէ մինչեւ այժմ որքան ֆինանսաւորում յատկացուցած է TRIPP նախագիծին։

Քոչարեան դատարանին մէջ բարձրացուց Փաշինեանի սպառնալիքներուն հարցը

ԵՐԵՒԱՆ.— Հայաստանի երկրորդ նախագահ Ռոպերթ Քոչարեան այսօր իր դէմ յարուցուած մարտ 1-ի գործով դատական նիստին ընթացքին քննութեան առարկայ դարձուց նախընտրական եւ յետընտրական ժամանակաշրջաններուն Նիկոլ Փաշինեանի կողմէ իր հասցէին հնչեցուած սպառնալիքները՝ «կզացնելու եմ», «սատկացնելու եմ» եւ «պիտի նստի» արտայայտութիւնները։

«Սա քաղաքական պատուէր է, ուղղակի նախկինում այդ պատուէրը SMS-ով էին ուղարկում, հիմա՝ հրապարակային։ Եւ դա քաղաքական խօսք չէ․ շատ պարզ, հրապարակային ասւում է, որ ես պէտք է նստեմ»,— դատական նիստին ընթացքին յայտարարեց Քոչարեան։

Դատաւորը, սակայն, պնդեց, թէ նշեալ արտայայտութիւնները քաղաքական յայտարարութիւններ են՝ նոյնիսկ արգիլելով զանոնք բարձրաձայնել դատարանի դահլիճին մէջ։ Քոչարեան միջնորդութիւն ներկայացուցած է՝ պահանջելով դադրեցնել իր նկատմամբ իրականացուող քրէական հետապնդումը։

Մայիսին, Երեւանի Արաբկիր վարչական շրջանին մէջ իրականացուող նախընտրական քարոզարշաւի ընթացքին, Փաշինեանի եւ քաղաքացիի մը միջեւ բուռն վիճաբանութիւն ծագած էր։ Կինը Փաշինեանը մեղադրած էր «երկիրը քանդելու» մէջ, որմէ ետք ան ըսած էր․ «Եթե Դուք Ռոբն եք, Ռոբին կզացնելու եմ, Ռոբը նստելու է, Ռոբին սատկացնելու եմ, կալուգացուն էլ եմ կզացնելու, սատկացնելու, Սերժին էլ, Գագոյին էլ»։

ԵՐԵՒԱՆ — Շուրջ երեք տարիէ ի վեր Ատրպէյճանի մէջ գերութեան մէջ պահուող եւ 20 տարուան ազատազրկման դատապարտուած Արցախի նախկին պետական նախարար եւ բարերար Ռուբէն Վարդանեանի դատական գործով դիմում պիտի ներկայացուի Մարդու իրաւունքներու եւրոպական դատարան (ՄԻԵԴ)։

Միջազգային իրաւունքի մասնագէտ եւ Հայկական իրաւական կեդրոնի (Armenian Legal Centre for Justice and Human Rights) գործադիր տնօրէն Սիրանուշ Սահակեան «Ազատութեան» յայտնած է, որ վերջապէս կարելի եղած է ստանալ Վարդանեանի դատավճիռը, որ անհրաժեշտ էր ՄԻԵԴ-ի մէջ գործընթացը սկսելու համար։ Անոր համաձայն՝ դիմումը դատարան պիտի ներկայացուի յառաջիկայ շաբաթներուն։

Սահակեան ընդգծած է, որ պաշտպանական կողմը պիտի փաստէ Վարդանեանի դէմ առաջադրուած մեղադրանքներուն քաղաքական բնոյթը։ «Հաւաքական ինքնորոշման իրաւունքը ապօրինաբար որակուած է իբրեւ ահաբեկչութիւն, մինչդեռ չի կրնար պատիժ սահմանուիլ՝ առանց օրէնքով նախատեսուած արարքի», ըսած է ան։

Միւս 15 հայ գերիներուն, ներառեալ Արցախի նախկին ռազմաքաղաքական ղեկավարութեան անդամներուն դատավճիռները, Պաքու տակաւին չէ տրամադրած ո՛չ բանտարկեալներուն, ո՛չ ալ անոնց փաստաբաններուն՝ հակառակ անոր, որ վճիռները հրապարակուած են ութ ամիս առաջ։

Սահակեանի կարծիքով՝ Ատրպէյճան այս ձեւով կը փորձէ խոչընդոտել միջազգային բողոքներու ներկայացումը։ ՄԻԵԴ-ը միջանկեալ որոշումով պահանջած է, որ Պաքու մինչեւ 31 Օգոստոս դատավճիռները ներկայացնէ դատարանին։

Պաքուի զինուորական դատարանը Փետրուարին 16 հայ գերիներ, ներառեալ Արցախի ռազմաքաղաքական ղեկավարութեան անդամները, դատապարտած էր ցմահ կամ երկարատեւ ազատազրկման։
