Can cognitive training help athletes improve the way they mentally rehearse sport performance?
A new exploratory masters study from Edwin John at the National Sports University in India examined whether 5 weeks of NeuroTracker training could influence athletes’ sport imagery ability.
10 elite male athletes were assigned to either NeuroTracker training or an active Quickboard control group. Imagery ability was measured before and after training using the Sports Imagery Ability Questionnaire.
The NeuroTracker group showed improvements across all imagery domains, with the strongest findings observed for strategy imagery and overall sport imagery ability.
Although a small sample size, this study raises an interesting question for future sport psychology research: can perceptual-cognitive training help support the mental skills athletes use to visualize, plan, and prepare for performance?
