AYM Dog Training
Muskoka's In-home, Private Puppy Training
Hot take: I don’t teach a “gentle” cue.
Instead, I teach bite inhibition.
Because here’s the question I always ask owners:
Would you rather your dog take food from your hand gently only when you ask… or automatically every single time?
A “gentle” cue means your dog still has the ability to grab roughly*— you’re just reminding them not to in that moment.
Teaching bite inhibition means your dog learns from the start how to control the pressure of their mouth. They learn that using their mouth too hard makes the fun stop.
It creates dogs who naturally:
• take treats softly
• play with appropriate mouth pressure
• are safer around hands, kids, and other animals
