Slow Pedagogy is the term coined by Professor Alison Clark to describe the intentional slowing down of our routines and rhythms to give children time and space for play, wonder, and exploration.

This isn't necessarily a new approach, however Professor Clark's work provides valuable terminology that we can use to describe these intentional decisions, recognising this approach to early childhood education that emphasises unhurried play and learning experiences.

Slow Knowledge and the Unhurried Child explores the relationship with time in early childhood by arguing for the valuing of slow pedagogies and slow knowledge. Alison Clark points to alternative practices in Early Childhood Education and Care that enable a different pace and rhythm, against the backdrop of the acceleration in early childhood and the proliferation of testing and measurement.

Courtney Dubyna’s love of educating children blossomed when she began helping out in a small family daycare she attended as a child. She decided to become an educator and enrolled in VIU’s Early Childhood Education program. She is now the Owner and ECE Directress of The Thinking Garden Childcare Centre Ltd.

“The program at VIU allowed me to express my personal beliefs around children and the childcare field. I could visit and work at centres through practicum placements and discover who I wanted to be as an early childhood educator,” says Courtney. “Getting my diploma opened many doors for me in this field and allowed me to meet and connect with so many wonderful educators around the Island.”

Courtney shares some highlights from her program in the latest VIU Blog. Read it @ https://www.viu.ca/blog/follow-your-heart-your-learning-journey
