Last week, we were disappointed to discover that many of our perennial plants had been stolen from the gardens at Legion 256. Like many in our community, we were saddened and frustrated by the actions of an individual who chose to damage something that volunteers work hard to create and maintain.
The good news is that our story doesn't end there.
Today, our friends at Buckerfield's Nanaimo stepped forward with an incredibly generous donation of beautiful replacement plants, along with a motion-activated sprinkler to help deter some of our four-legged garden visitors. Their kindness and support mean a great deal to us.
We also want our community to know that our Blink security cameras are active and were instrumental in alerting us to the theft. In fact, the individual responsible fled the scene after hearing that the RCMP had been notified. Additional signage will be installed to remind would-be thieves and vandals that our property is monitored and that activity is recorded in real time.
Most importantly, this experience has reminded us of something very important: there are far more good people than bad. While the actions of one person may have disappointed us, the generosity and support shown by Buckerfield's Nanaimo and countless members of our community have more than restored our faith.
On behalf of Legion 256, and our friends at Legion 10 who have also benefited from Buckerfield's support, thank you for standing with us. Community spirit is alive and well in Nanaimo.
đź’™ Thank you to Cindy, and her staff at Buckerfield's Nanaimo, for helping our gardens bloom once again.

The Royal Canadian Legion Mount Benson Branch 256 held a ceremony today to commemorate the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Let us never forget the more than $10,000 Canadian lives that were lost during this battle.
Thank you to all those who attended the ceremony today.

As The Royal Canadian Legion marks its 100th anniversary, we are proud to introduce the limited-edition Legion 100 commemorative tulip—a living tribute to a century of service and sacrifice.
Developed in collaboration with the Canadian Tulip Festival, this symbolic flower reflects a shared history rooted in Canada’s role in the liberation of the Netherlands during the Second World War. Its distinctive red and white petals evoke the spirit of Remembrance, while its upward form looks ahead to the Legion’s next century of impact.
Planted this year, these tulips will bloom in spring 2027—serving as a powerful reminder of the legacy built by Canada’s Veterans, and the continued support they deserve.
Proceeds from bulb sales will directly support the Legion’s programs for Veterans and their families, as well as the Canadian Tulip Legacy.
Join us in celebrating 100 years—and help plant the future.
