Are you a fan of lilacs?
In 1966, to commemorate Canada’s 100th birthday the following year, the American Rotary Clubs of District 709 donated $3500 for the Parks Commission to establish a Centennial Lilac Garden.
The chosen land had been part of the old Larkin farm apple orchard and could be found between the Floral Clock and the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. This spot was ideal as there was a good depth of soil as well as being visually pleasing thanks to the contours and texture of the surrounding area.
The gardens were finished in 1981 and a plaque commemorating the Rotary’s donation was unveiled. Visitors and locals alike can still visit this grove, which features over 1200 plants and 200 varieties.
It’s best to see the lilac grove in May and early June, so there is still some time to experience the beauty and fragrance of the lilacs in Niagara Falls.
