The jingle dress (known as shiibaashka’igan in Anishinaabemowin) is a sacred Native American and First Nations powwow regalia rooted deeply in spiritual healing, prayer, and community resilience.

Celebrating Indigenous Cultural Heritage by showcasing women in a jingle dress, a regalia rooted in early 20th-century Ojibwe healing traditions that symbolize resilience and spiritual wellness.
The Jingle Dress originated in a dream during the early 1900s influenza pandemic as a “Prayer Dress” and “Healing Dress” in Whitefish bay.
An Ojibwe medicine man dreamt of four spirit women wearing special dresses and dancing.
After he and his wife made the dress, his sick granddaughter wore it. At first his granddaughter was too sick to dance on her own so the other women danced with her and for her until she was able to dance on her own; she miraculously healed.

I honour my fellow Indigenous sisters and brothers, our ancestors, our Elders, our knowledge keepers, and the generations yet to come.
This day is a celebration of the cultures, languages, traditions, and the strength that continues to flow through our communities.
I am grateful to stand alongside so many incredible Indigenous people who inspire change, preserve culture, support healing, and carry forward the teachings of our ancestors. May we continue to walk proudly in our identity, lift one another up, and create a future where our voices, stories, and traditions are honoured and celebrated every day.
