A mine a Clayoquot Sound?! Recent mineral exploration permits have been issued to Imperial Metals by the Province of British Columbia in Clayoquot Sound. The permits issued, extending until 2031, allow for 22 drill pad sites, 6 trenches, and 3 helipads in the Hiłsyaqƛis / Tranquil Creek watershed—a designated Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Park since 2013. Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation has made it clear that mining is not a permissible activity in their ḥaḥuułi (territory), and the province didn't listen.

Not to mention, Imperial Metals has a terrible track record. In 2014, the failure of the tailings dam at their Mount Polley mine resulted in the spilling of 25 million cubic metres of toxic tailings and slurry into pristine Quesnel Lake—home to a quarter of the Fraser River's sockeye salmon. This was one of the biggest mining disasters in the world. It is our responsibility to not let history repeat itself.

Clayoquot Action has stood united with Tla-o-qui-aht against mining since our founding in 2013, and will continue to oppose any attempts to open mines here in the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Region.
