Becoming a licensed engineer in Canada is a big milestone.
If you trained outside Canada, the path can feel confusing and slow.
It doesn’t have to.
Here’s a simple 5‑step roadmap to your P.Eng.:
1️⃣ Pick your provincial association & apply
Choose the province where you live (or plan to move). Submit your application, documents, and ID so they can assess your education.
2️⃣ Write technical exams (if required)
If there are gaps between your degree and a Canadian program, your association may assign technical exams. Plan for up to 4 exams.
3️⃣ Submit your Competency‑Based Assessment (CBA)
Show your best project examples from 4+ years of experience. Focus on specific problems you solved, not just day‑to‑day duties.
4️⃣ Pass the NPPE
This law, ethics, and professional practice exam is 110 multiple‑choice questions in 2.5 hours. Start early; do not leave it to the last minute.
5️⃣ Wait for board approval and celebrate
Once your file is complete and approved, you receive your P.Eng. licence and can take the next step in your Canadian engineering career.
