The best-performing ad wasn’t the most polished one.
It was the one where the audience saw themselves immediately. 👀
For a recent campaign with BC Colleges and SkillPlan, we were trying to reach trades training students across Canada.
And we knew generic targeting wasn’t going to cut it.
So instead of broad interest targeting, we built a hyper-local strategy from the ground up:
• 92 trades training campuses manually compiled
• 1-mile Google Ads targeting around every campus
• Meta targeting layered by individual college locations
The goal was simple:
Reach people where they already were… while they were already in “learning mode.”
But targeting only gets you in front of the right people.
Creative is what makes them stop scrolling.
The best-performing Facebook & Instagram ad was this simple student-focused video because the audience instantly recognized themselves in it:
• the classroom setting
• the trades environment
• the confusion/frustration
• the experience of trying to keep up
It felt familiar.
And that’s the real lesson:
People pay attention to content that reflects their reality.
Not just “good-looking” creative.
Not just polished branding.
Recognition.
Because when your audience feels understood, performance changes.
