Interesting to see this at the CIPSRT conference in Calgary.

Throughout the conference, RCMP Public Safety Communicators are clearly being recognized by researchers, clinicians, and subject matter experts as part of the Public Safety Occupation and First Responder community. Even displays such as this one include communications personnel alongside other recognized public safety professions.

Yet despite this growing recognition across the public safety and academic communities, the Treasury Board President and the Minister of Public Safety continue to refuse to formally recognize RCMP Public Safety Communicators as a Public Safety Occupation and continue to refuse to meet with our union on this issue.

RCMP Public Safety Communicators manage life-threatening incidents in real time from first contact through to resolution, coordinating emergency responses and frontline operations 24/7 while helping protect public safety and officer safety across Canada. During a recent meeting with the union, even the RCMP Commissioner acknowledged that our members are front line personnel.

The recognition is already there from the experts and the broader public safety community. It is time for the federal government to catch up.

You may not see their faces, but the first person you’ll meet in an emergency is often a telecommunicators operator. Over their headset, these dedicated professionals offer calm, dedicated support to callers and first responders.

David Locke has worked as a telecommunications operator for nine years. His days are spent listening intently, sorting through information and connecting people with the right resources when they need help. It’s always changing, never routine.

Each call brings a different person, a different situation and different needs. What connects them all is the responsibility of the person who answers: to respond with accuracy, care and professionalism, even in difficult and high stress situations.

David and the rest of the team in our Operational Communication Centre show up every day to get our fellow Newfoundlanders and Labradorians the help they need, when they need it.

This National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, we recognize the essential, often unseen, work that happens on the other end of the line and the incredible people like David who choose to do it.
