Two Muslim women in front of the House of Commons were accosted and subject to what’s clearly xenophobic intimidation and hate by someone putting forward bizarre and nonsensical suggestions.
Yet again, we find ourselves disturbed, saddened, and deeply frustrated by another anti-Muslim incident that defies the boundaries of common human decency.
It is now obvious that such sentiment, along with physical threats and assault, continues to increase across Canada at an alarming rate.
But this is not who we are. This is a moment of crisis that must be met with a renewed national strategy that involves Muslim community members.
We do not have to accept everyday Islamophobia as the new normal. We are reaching out to those involved in this incident. We will have more to say as the sotuation evolves.
It is hard to put into words the extreme sadness, frustration, and anger so many of us are feeling with respect to an alleged group attack on a Muslim woman in front of her 7-year-old child and others in Moncton, New Brunswick.
While trying to enjoy a car parade inside a parking lot, the family were allegedly accosted by a group that yelled obscenities at them, including phrases like “Go back to your country.”
Moments after, the group then allegedly beat the Muslim women in front of her son, while her husband was some distance away. He said he found her later on with a swollen face and bloody nose, along with other sign of an alleged assault.
This is a horrifying ordeal and the authorities have been alerted. We are in touch with all parties and urge authorities to investigate all angles of this incident, including hate motivations.
Meanwhile, we urge all elected officials in Atlantic Canada and beyond to denounce the rise in Islamophobia across Canada, and to meet with community members.
We will have more to say as the situation evolves.

This past weekend, a fake severed hand covered in blood was thrown at the entrance of Montreal’s MAC Verdun Islamic Centre, while families and children were gathered inside.
The “blood-like” substance is currently being analyzed and authorities are investigating the incident.
We are in the midst of an Islamophobia surge across Quebec and Canada that threatens the very social fabric of this country. Every day, such incidents are occurring again and again.
We cannot accept this as the new normal. Enough is enough.
We need a new anti-Islamophobia national strategy.
We call on all elected leaders to denounce what happened at Verdun, and to work with community members to build a new way forward.

La fin de semaine dernière, une fausse main sectionnée couverte de sang a été lancée à l’entrée du Centre islamique MAC de Verdun, à Montréal, alors que des familles et des enfants se trouvaient à l’intérieur.
La substance ressemblant à du sang est en cours d’analyse, et les autorités enquêtent sur l’incident.
Il est clair que l’islamophobie est en forte hausse au Québec et partout au Canada. Cette situation menace le tissu social de notre pays. Chaque jour, des incidents comme celui-ci se produisent, encore et encore.
Nous ne pouvons pas accepter que cela devienne la nouvelle norme. Ça suffit.
Nous avons besoin d’une nouvelle stratégie nationale de lutte contre l’islamophobie.
Nous appelons tous les élus à dénoncer ce qui s’est passé à Verdun et à travailler avec les membres de la communauté afin de tracer une nouvelle voie pour l’avenir.

We are relieved to see that the news is public that charges have been laid against the suspect who allegedly tried to hit a hijab-wearing woman with her car in Edmonton this past May.
She also allegedly made a number of xenophobic and racist remarks towards her target.
Kelly Smith has been charged with assault with a weapon and criminal hit and run. Police are looking into hate-motivations as well.
We again call on all elected leaders in Edmonton and beyond to stand up against this terrible incident, and to make sure to work with Muslim community members across the board to build a real plan forward that tackles rising Islamophobia and hate.

Now more than ever, we need our elected leaders on all levels of government to stand up for human rights.
The IDF is being investigated on accusations of genocide and Palestinians continue to face ethnic cleansing and annexation.
