So, this is a bit outside of my wheelhouse, but I thought I'd give it a try. I am happy to report, I am pleased with the results!
My poor, old Seagull acoustic guitar was in need of some serious TLC. The finish on it was so worn and no longer was protecting the wood. I had a day off today, and decided to give it go!
To be clear, I would never attempt this on a Taylor, Martin, or Gibson, but on a 20+ year old Seagull, I figured it was worth a shot...I couldn't screw it up that much, right? Also to say, I love, love, love my Seagull! It has served me well over 20 years, and at times, feels like my best friend. I love my guitar. But it needed some more loving than strumming.
I sanded it down to the wood, being very careful not to remove too much material. I started with 180, to 220, to 320. In hindsight, I should have went much finer for such delicate wood, perhaps has high as 600. Lesson learned! Anyways, I removed the old finish and gave it 3 coats of watered down SamaN varnish, satin finish. I buffed it out with a paper bag until the sheen was smooth and even.
It's not a perfect finish by any means, but I am super happy with it! Also, to note, the guitar sounds brighter now, that's even with the old strings on! I feel pleased that at least it will be protected from the humidity, etc.
