Canadians are approaching holiday shopping with a thoughtful and strategic mindset this year, reflecting their adaptability to current economic conditions.

A recent survey by Affirm Canada Holdings Ltd. reveals that over three-quarters of consumers are adopting a “slow shopping” approach, taking the time to consider their purchases rather than rushing into decisions carefully. Additionally, 71 percent of shoppers dedicate more time to making smarter choices, while 60 percent opt to spread their spending throughout the season, allowing for a more manageable budget.

Interestingly, 46 percent of Canadians plan to reduce holiday spending this year. At the same time, only eight percent have chosen to increase their budgets, according to findings from the Angus Reid Institute. This indicates a cautious yet practical approach to holiday finances.

Furthermore, many Canadians are taking advantage of the buy now, pay later (BNPL) option, which provides the flexibility to pay for items over several months rather than upfront, enhancing their shopping experience during the holiday season.

Canadian consumer sentiment about the housing market is cautiously optimistic, with a Leger survey for Re/Max showing that 36% expect conditions to improve in 2025. Despite affordability challenges, 73% still view homeownership as the best investment. Nearly half believe homeownership is attainable, and 40% would consider relocating to manage costs. Moreover, interest in climate-resilient housing is rising, with 47% prioritizing properties less affected by climate change, representing a 14% increase since 2024.
