iCloud is for sharing your Mac's content over multiple devices; it is not a suitable backup solution, imho. If used as a backup, it will take up a lot of space on your SSD, because it backs up itself again onto your local drive, and causes your SSD to become way too full too early. I see this all the time, the system is misunderstood by many people. Use an external drive as a backup, and save yourself the bewilderment of trying to figure out what happened to your SSD space, and what those mysterious System files are: they are backups of backups!
