It’s been over a year since I hiked up the Ptarmigan Creek valley, so I thought Sunday might be a nice day to focus on my mental health rather than work😉

It was a long day with limited daylight, but we climbed over hundreds of logs along the 7kms to the old horse camp and marked most of the route. Looking forward to re-establishing this old trail within the next year or two!

Background:
In early 2001, a very large avalanche blocked Ptarmigan Creek and created a small lake. The avalanche debris was eventually breached, and the ensuing flood washed out several bridges and a large section of the Ptarmigan Creek Trail. According to several reports I’ve had from hikers who knew the trail well, the area became “virtually impossible” to access following the flood. The BC Parks website has an alert regarding the flood to this day and says the following:
“Note: the trail is not well-marked. The trail is not recommended for inexperienced people as it is difficult to follow due to dense shoulder-high vegetation and few markers.”

I found a marker last summer! You can see it in the green photo. Can you spot the trail? Me neither!

Based on the praise given the area by long-time Caledonia Ramblers, I began exploring Ptarmigan Creek in the winter of 2020 and have now found a very solid route that joins the old trail about 7kms up the valley.
