As an interior designer specializing in residential new builds, these are 3 questions I’d ask a builder before hiring them, if I was building a home in 2026. 🏡
1️⃣ How will you communicate throughout the build?
Weekly updates? Site meetings? Email? Text? 📲
Make sure you know how decisions, progress, and changes will be documented. Also communicate how YOU like to be communicated with.
2️⃣When will I receive the project budget? 💵
Before construction starts. You should understand where your money is going (way) before the first day on site. Adjustments can happen, but surprises shouldn’t.
Don’t shy away from money talk. Get comfortable with it as this may be the biggest investment of your life and clear expectations are key.
3️⃣How do you handle problems when they come up?
Know what they’ll resolve on their own and what they’ll bring to your attention. Clear expectations make for a smoother build.
⭐ Bonus: Ask about their sub-trades.⭐️
Call the electrician or plumber and ask what it’s really like working with that builder. Happy trades usually mean an organized, respectful builder, and a smoother experience for you.
