I have been blessed to have been featured in The Carlyle Observer several times for the publication of my novels in the Abbington Pickets series. So sad to see that this will be the last paper printed (Dec 18, 2025) after 89 years of printing the local news. As a kid I loved to go into the Observer (in the front part where they sold office supplies and where you would put an ad in for the paper or pay for the subscription etc.) to look at the coloured paper, different pens and stationary stuff that was for sale. I loved different types of paper, stamps and anything to do with writing. I once wrote a little paper while on holidays with my family, to Jasper. I wished I would have kept that paper. Just like today’s Facebook, our local paper told us the news (good or bad), let us brag when a new baby was born into the family, let us tell everyone we were going to get married, then share the day we were married, and even when we celebrated a special milestone. Everyone looked forward to getting the paper in their mail box and reading the local news every week(and yep, once upon a time the newspaper came in your mail box). But as the internet filled our lives, every year the local papers got smaller. Sad reality.
On a happy note, My hubby Ken Hewitt is on the second page, in colour of this final edition, featuring his new role as Fire Chief. A wonderful great keep sake to have in the last edition, completely in colour (I believe colour was usually just the first page). It will be a great story our kids and grandkids can share with their grand kids in 50 years! Thank you The Carlyle Observer for all the years of service to our community and sharing the news that are now memories for our families to look back on.
