SECRET OF SUCCESS FOR SUMMER PLANTING - It can be hard to water new plantings in dry summer soils because dry soil becomes hydrophobic and resists the pe*******on of water so that water will not sink down into the root ball of your plant but travel across the surface and away.

The trick is to take the excess soil from your planting and build a circular d**e around your plant that creates a bowl that you can fill with water. Then you know the water will sink straight down into the root ball of your new treasure and keep it nice and moist for summer establishment.

You can also use this trick with existing plantings that are having trouble. I planted these hellebores in my garden under the boughs of a large conifer. They’ve been having a bit of a tough time establishing these last couple years and with this drought, it’s making it worse. So I’ve built circular d**es around them to help me supply them with water.

Use this trick and you can plant all summer long!
