Did you know 58% of food produced is never eaten? Food waste is one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions in Canada.
Studies have shown that avoidable food waste in Canada produces more than 22 million tonnes of climate-changing carbon dioxide emissions!
Here are a few tips to fight food waste:
🍜 Plan your meals: Before you go grocery shopping, make a meal plan for the week ahead. This can help you buy only the food you need and reduce the risk of overbuying.
🛒 Shop smart: Check expiry dates. Buy fruits and vegetables that are in season and don't be afraid to buy "ugly" produce!
🥬 Store food properly: Proper storage can help prevent food from spoiling too quickly. Keep fruits and veggies in separate containers, and store them in the refrigerator or pantry. Use airtight containers or wraps to keep food fresh.
⏲ Use leftovers: Don't let your leftovers go to waste! Incorporate them into new meals, or freeze them for later use.
🚮 Compost: If you don't have a compost bin, check if your municipality has a composting program or community garden where you can donate your food scraps.
🥑 Donate excess food: If you have excess food that you can't use, consider donating it to a local food bank or charity. This can help feed those in need and prevent food waste.
