I sat down and wrote a detailed response to Jim Lill’s “Tested: Where Does the Tone Come From in a Microphone Preamp?”

To be clear, I think a lot of the testing in the video is valuable, and I agree with several of the conclusions. Where I disagree is that some of the conclusions seem to go further than what the tests themselves actually demonstrate.

Controlled tests are valuable, but they don’t automatically capture every meaningful aspect of how gear behaves in real recording workflows.

I spent the time to go through the video from beginning to end, covering where I agree, where I disagree, and why. If you’re into audio engineering, recording, analog gear, preamps, distortion, sample rates, aliasing, or just enjoy nerdy audio discussions, you might find it interesting.
