Tennis Elbow
🔹 Lateral epicondylitis, also known as tennis elbow, is a common condition, characterized by pain at the outside of the elbow.
🔹 Tennis elbow gets its name from tennis players repeatedly using a backhand swing, usually with poor technique and irritating the extensor tendons. Tennis elbow can occur in anyone and is typically seen in people who work in industries that require repetitive motions.
🔹 The main cause of tennis elbow is overuse as repetitive contraction of the muscles can lead to tearing of the common extensor tendon.
🔹 Tennis elbow can be treated conservatively with soft tissue work, stretching and exercise.

Disc Herniations
🔹 Disc herniations, especially in the lumbar spine are quite common in practice. They can range from mild to severe and can be very debilitating. They can make it difficult to move or sleep comfortably, can cause pain from sitting too long, and in more severe cases lead to bowel or bladder dysfunction.
🔹 While some people will present with a shooting or burning pain down one leg or arm, people can also have herniations without any symptoms. It’s important to stay active and move as much as you can in order to control symptoms.
🔹 People with disc herniations will generally have a directional preference. This means that moving in one direction is usually more irritating than in any other direction. It’s important to temporarily reduce moving into the painful direction and begin exercises into the pain-free direction.
🔹 Once symptoms have calmed down, you can slowly build up your tolerance to those painful motions and get back to normal movement.
🔹 Stay tuned for my next post, where I go over some rehab exercises for controlling these symptoms and reducing pain.
