There is no doubt that the comments “well we are all on the spectrum” or “we are all a little autistic” often come with the intentions of being empathetic and accepting. However this is not how it is likely received and can minimize the experiences of autistic people.

“If you can’t match an autistic person’s life experiences, don’t claim their identity”

If we were all a little autistic, then inclusive practices wouldn’t be new. Malls, stores, and schools wouldn’t be so overwhelming, the list could go on and on.

We wouldnt say to someone with depression “we all get sad sometimes” so why do it to autistic people?
