From the Pastors desk...Thoughts that may make it into the sermon on Sunday
I wonder if you have read those threads where a person tells of how they received
compassion or generosity from an unlikely source? We perhaps have examples ourselves
where someone who seemed not to like us, relate to us, or was generally grumpy surprised
us with a gift or some other form of encouragement? I thought of such situations as I was
reading Matthew 7 in preparation for our service on Sunday. We at TBC are hoping to enjoy
the service outside and have a BBQ pot luck together so as its all going to be a bit informal I
thought I might lay aside our journey through the Lords Prayer for a week and see what else
Jesus says about prayer, food and fathers. This is the phrase that keeps coming back to me
"How much more." Three simple words.
If an imperfect parent can be patient, how much more is God patient? If an imperfect person
can forgive, how much more does God forgive? If ordinary people can show generosity,
kindness, and compassion, how much more can we trust the One who is the source of all
goodness? Jesus built an entire invitation to prayer on those three words.
Maybe faith begins there—not with having all the answers, but with daring to believe that God
is better than we imagine.
None of us love perfectly, yet every day we catch glimpses of generosity, compassion, and
grace. Jesus noticed this too. He said that if ordinary fathers know how to give good gifts, how
much more does God? What if the best moments of human kindness are not the destination,
but signposts? What if every act of love points beyond itself to the One from whom love
comes?
You are welcome to join us on Sunday at 10.30 for a service and BBQ outside TBC.
