This painting began accidentally in 2016.

At the time I was working as a set decorator in commercial film production. An art director borrowed one of my paintings for a set, then backed out on the rental fee afterward saying: “we didn’t even use it.”

To make it right, a friend from the production dropped off about twenty leftover 16 × 16” canvases from another commercial shoot. Over the next decade these canvases drifted through garages, studios, moves, dust, paint piles, and resin pours. They became places to test colours, wipe brushes, dump excess material, or casually make marks before being forgotten again.

Over time I learned the hard way that resin poured onto unsupported canvas sinks inward, creating a concave lens effect beneath the surface. Instead of abandoning the piece, I kept building it — layer after layer of paint and resin over many years until the visible surface returned to flatness while the warped structure underneath remained trapped below.

At the centre this painting is now nearly 3/4” thick with accumulated resin and paint. It feels less like an image I intentionally composed and more like a fossil of accumulated time, material, studios, mistakes, and attention.

Some paintings are made quickly.
Some slowly absorb a decade of your life.

That’s a wrap at Live Events Fest.

Had an amazing time bringing a live painting activation to life in front of a hall full of event planners.

There’s nothing like transforming a blank canvas into a custom art spectacle in real time — it pulls people in, starts conversations, and becomes a focal point for the entire event.
