Creating your colour palette doesn’t just mean choosing “aesthetic colours that go together that give the vibe of your brand.”

The process is more nuanced than that.

Not only do we care about “vibe” and “feeling” and “brand,” we also care about accessibility and options for layering and design.

If you look at my photos above, you’ll see that not all colours in the same palette layered ONTO each other are created equal.

Slide 1: Yellow words on warm grey is slightly hard on the eyes.

Slide 2: Off-black on hot pink is iffy. Why? Because one trick I learned in design school was if a coloured design was converted to black and white and their tonalities cancelled each other out, then the coloured version of that design would likely not work either.

Slide 3: Type on colours look great. However, pinky-purple on olive and periwinkle might become inaccessible if my font weight was thin and delicate.
(This is why all elements of brand design must work together harmoniously.)

When designing, I try my absolute best to choose your palette so it best aligns with your brand, and so it can be used realistically.

I present my best options, but I do understand that colour feelings run deep and in the end, your final palette is ultimately your decision.
