Today, we pause to remember and honor the lives of Benno Franz Mattes, founder and visionary leader of Del’s Pastry, and Dieter Claassen, a dedicated and respected member of our Del’s Pastry family.

Benno Franz Mattes built the foundation of Del’s Pastry with determination, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to quality. After immigrating to Canada in 1961, Benno transformed a small, struggling bakery into the company we know today through hard work, discipline, and strong values. Alongside his wife Edith and later his children, Benno created more than a business—he created a family legacy grounded in craftsmanship, integrity, and care for people. His leadership and vision continue to guide Del’s Pastry every day.

Dieter Claassen was a valued employee who dedicated more than 30 years of his career to Del’s Pastry. Known for his professionalism, kindness, and deep knowledge of the baking industry, Dieter was admired by colleagues and peers alike. From his early days in Germany to his impactful career in Canada, Dieter built lasting relationships and made meaningful contributions both within Del’s Pastry and throughout the baking community. His passion for the industry and respect for others left a lasting impression on everyone he worked with.

At Del’s Pastry, we are more than a workplace—we are a family. The legacies of Benno and Dieter live on through the company they helped build, the values they embodied, and the people they inspired.

Our thoughts are with their families, loved ones, and all those who had the privilege of knowing them. They will always be an important part of the Del’s Pastry story.
